Alexa Ray Joel Covers Her Dad’s Famous Tune for Gap Campaign

It's true what they say: The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Or, in this case, the voice.
Billy Joel's daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, covers her dad's famous tune, "Just The Way You Are," in a new ad for clothing retailer Gap.
The 30-second spot features Alexa Ray seated at a keyboard similar to the one her father used to record the multiple-Grammy-winning tune in 1977, and delivering an intimate, wistful rendition of the song. While both versions rely heavily on keyboards, the elder Joel's is backed by a full band and a saxophone, while Alexa's take is more stripped down and slightly slower in tempo.
The brief, unedited clip illustrates Alexa Ray's skill as a pianist and vocalist, which should come as no surprise since she's recorded music of her own and has performed with her dad at several charity and New York Fashion Week events.

The Gap campaign also sees the 27-year-old following in the footsteps of her supermodel mother, Christie Brinkley, who has posed for several renowned clothing and cosmetic brands.
The ad is part of Gap's global Back to Blue fall marketing campaign, which also features Dhani Harrison covering the tune "For You Blue," written by his father, George Harrison, which appeared on the Beatles' landmark Let It Be album.
Speaking about the campaign, Seth Farbman, Gap’s Global Chief Marketing Officer, said, "The entire Back to Blue campaign embodies what it means to be comfortable in your own skin. As a brand that is known for expressing itself through sight, sound, and motion, we wanted to bring this idea to life through the voices of two individuals who are recognized for staying true to who they want to be. To me, honest, open, and heartfelt films like these are the future of video content."
The complete cover versions of "Just The Way You Are" and "For You Blue" are available for download on iTunes. All proceeds from Harrison's track will go to George Harrison's Material World Foundation, which is currently working on a campaign with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation to cure spinal cord injuries.

Designer Christian Siriano building out the biz

NEW YORK (AP) — At 27 and fresh from an island vacation, Christian Siriano the designer is working on Christian Siriano the mogul.
Having dabbled in cosmetics in the past for Victoria's Secret, the former makeup artist and hair stylist has a new year-long beauty partnership with Sebastian Professional, an as-yet unnamed fragrance and his bespectacled eyes on designing, yes, eyewear.
And he hopes to expand his brick-and-mortar presence over the next few years. Now, he has just one namesake shop that opened last year in downtown Manhattan, selling everything from accessories to fancy home goods.
"The last year or two has been really about growing the business," Siriano said in an interview backstage Saturday before his spring preview in a favorite downtown venue. "I really wanted to make sure we were selling clothes first and really building with retailers. My store opening was a big jump for us, especially being a small designer."
So how big is too big for the season four "Project Runway" winner? Does he fret losing himself in a lifestyle brand?
"I thought it would be hard," Siriano said. "But at the end of the day, I'm growing up. I'm definitely learning every season about what I can do, what I can't do. What I like and what I don't like."
For spring, what he wanted was to take his ladies to the "Island of Women," Isla Mujeres on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Bright yellow, coral and greens breezed down the runway in crepe for capes, or were woven into raffia.
"I took my first vacation this year," Siriano smiled. "I just loved it. It was bright. It was fun. All the streets were, like, colorblocked and painted and all the local women were making these handcrafted textiles."
Other, more subtle looks had him twisting the raffia palms into delicate floral French knots on eveningwear in subtle blushes and whites, including cropped tops paired with cropped white trousers.
A series of flouncy jackets and skirts came in black-and-white zigzags.
While building out his business, Siriano said, he's firmly focused on his loyal ladies. They're the ones who buy him at Neiman Marcus stores throughout the country and boutiques around the world.
"Keeping the customer is the hardest thing," Siriano said. "You can get one woman to buy something one season, but keeping them season after season is the biggest goal. I need to sell the clothes at the end of the day."

Sandra Bullock: I Didn’t Feel Worthy of Winning My Oscar

Sandra Bullock at TIFF

"Gravity" very well could make Sandra Bullock a two-time Oscar winner.
Buzz that the 49-year-old movie star will take home Best Actress again in February is higher than ever following Sunday night's screening of the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Post-premiere Bullock came out for a 20 minute Q&A with director Alfonso Cuarón (George Clooney didn't attend TIFF). One audience member asked Sandra to reflect on her Oscar win in 2010, and whether it was an out of body experience (get that gravity pun?).
"I think most people have that out of body experience when they win the Oscar. I had a little newborn at home so my body was already out of it's element I think," Sandra quipped. "I still haven't gotten around to having my moment with it yet. Maybe one day it will come."
Sandra adopted a baby boy, Louis, and managed to keep it a secret during awards season when she took home the Oscar for her performance in "The Blind Side."
"What [winning an Oscar] does do is it makes you realize how hard you have to work to earn it," continued Sandra. "I didn't feel worthy of it when I got it, so I thought, 'Okay, I'm going to spend the rest of my life earning it, but having a really good time in the process as well.' So out of body experience completely, but it's exhaustion I had as well."
Although Bullock stars alongside George Clooney in "Gravity," it's very much a one woman show.
"It was lonely, but in the best way. I don't know any other way to say it. It was frustrating, it was painful, it was isolating," Sandra half teased about the grueling filming process. "After a while you just get used it, you wanted to kill Alfonso regularly, and I used that as well. So all your hate and your anger and your rage you just give forth in your work and you hope it translates on the screen."
"It was an amazing experience to be able to do as an actor, but I think more importantly as a woman," a more serious Sandra added. "[The role] very easily could have gone to a man."
Two real life astronauts, Chris Hadfield and Roberta Bondar, were in the audience on Sunday evening. During the Q&A one moviegoer asked Chris if the film was an accurate portrayal of what it's like to be in space.
"Fortunately the five months I spent on the space station went way calmer," Chris told a cheer-happy crowd. "The visuals are spectacularly good in this film. I mean I don't understand how you did that. That was just marvelous to look at. And if I ever fly in space again, I want to fly with Sandra."

Stars attend 'The Devil's Knot' premiere during the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival at The Elgin on September 8, 2013 in Toronto, Canada.

Serena Williams wins 17th Grand Slam title Sunday at the U.S. Open

Serena Williams of the U.S. embraces her trophy after defeating Azarenka of Belarus in their women's singles final match at the U.S. Open tennis championships in New York

Back in 1999, Serena Williams was a teenager at the U.S. Open with a ton of talent and absolutely no idea about legacy, history or what might happen 15 years from that finals defeat of Martina Hingis.
In 2013, Williams might have done enough to be considered the greatest champion in women's tennis history.
Serena took out No. 2 Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-1 on Sunday to win her 17th Grand Slam title, an accomplishment made all the more impressive by the sheer longevity of her career as a Grand Slam champion and the fact that she will be 32-years-old by the time this month ends.
The win marks the fourth time in her career that Williams was able to defend a Grand Slam title, and the sixth time that Williams was able to win multiple Grand Slams in the same season after her Australian Open win earlier this year.
It wasn't an easy march for Serena, who looked like she would win this one in straight sets, serving for the match twice. Azarenka, who has been on the wrong side of this U.S. Open final for the second straight season, battled back with a ton of heart in that second set, with the two breaks and coming back in the tiebreaker to take the championship to three sets, but it was there Serena decided to show just how complete her game has become.
Williams' fastest serve on Sunday? Just 126 miles per hour, three miles per hour faster thanRafael Nadal notched in his semifinal win over Richard Gasquet.
Her third set stats when it looked like she was on the ropes and the momentum was in Azarenka's favor? An 85 percent first serve winning percentage, and facing just three break points, was able to convert two of them.
Williams now goes to the 2014 season with her eyes on a few different numbers. This win marks her 17th Grand Slam, putting her just one big win away from tying the 18 that both Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova were able to win, and it looks like she won't need much of a tweak to her game to at least match that number next season.
For now, Serena ends this season on an incredibly high note, winning a tournament that looked a breeze until that second set on Sunday and proving everyone that age is simply not a factor in Serena's world.

Selena Gomez Wears Leather Short Shorts Onstage In Amsterdam

selena gomez

That didn't take long! Selena Gomez took a break from short shorts for a few weeks, but the look is back and tinier than ever.
The 21-year-old took to the stage twice this week in some very leggy ensembles. On Tuesday (Sept. 3), Gomez opted for a pair of teeny shorts that may or may not have actually just been leather underwear at Amsterdam's Heineken Music Hall. On Sunday (Sept. 1), she wowed in a pair of itty-bitty, high-waisted white shorts in Oslo, Norway. She paired both with a sheer, billowy white top and black lace-up boots.
The "Come & Get It" singer is currently making her way around the world for her"Stars Dance" tour. She has been having fun in the Venice of the North, enjoying thelocal cuisine and posing for photos with handsome locals.
Next up, Gomez has a show in Portugal on Sept. 11. Then, she is due back stateside to kick off her U.S. tour dates on Oct. 10 in Virginia.

Taylor Swift, Betty White Enter 'Guinness World Records' Book

Taylor Swift, Betty White Enter 'Guinness World Records' Book

Taylor Swift is officially a record breaker, according to the 2014 Guinness World Records. As People reports, Swift will enter the new edition of the book with the awkwardly specific title "First Solo Female with Two Million-Selling Weeks on the U.S. Albums Chart."
But T-Swift isn't the only fresh-faced pop star to nab a spot in the legendary book: Rihanna has earned the title "Most 'Liked' Person on Facebook," while Justin Bieber is officially the "Youngest Solo Artist to Have Five U.S. #1 Albums" and "Youngest Musician with a Music Channel Viewed Three Billion Times." Meanwhile, One Direction have earned "Most Twitter Followers for a Pop Group."
The 2014 Guinness book isn't totally dominated by young pop stars: The 91-year-old Betty White has been recognized for her incredible (and incredibly lengthy) career in television, earning "Longest TV Career for an Entertainer (Female)."
"The book has always been fascinating to me," White noted in a statement. "I can't believe I'm now associated with it."

Spain king's scandal-hit daughter puts mansion up for sale

Infanta Cristina of Spain attends an art exhibition preview in Washington on September 13, 2011. King Juan Carlos

Spanish King Juan Carlos's scandal-hit daughter Cristina and her husband have put their seven-room mansion in Barcelona up for sale for 9.8 million euros ($12.9 million), Spanish media reported Friday.
The three-floor home in the exclusive Pedralbes area of the Catalan capital is listed with real estate firm Barcelonarent.info, which specialises in selling to wealthy Russians, daily newspaper El Mundo and other media reported.
Spanish media published several photos of the inside of the house and gardens taken from the firm's website, which was inaccessible on Friday due to Internet traffic congestion.
The agency described the property as a "luxury villa in the most prestigious zone of Barcelona" in a "quiet and exclusive" area that allows for "maximum confidentiality", El Mundo reported.
The 1,000-square-metre (10,700-square-foot) mansion has seven bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a large living room with a fireplace, and an elevator, along with a 1,300-square-metre garden and salt water swimming pool.
Cristina and her husband, the former Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin, bought the home in 2004 for 5.8 million euros and spent around 3,000,000 euros upgrading the property, according to Spanish media reports.
King Juan Carlos lent Cristina 1.2 million euros to help her buy the house, the royal palace said Monday after Spanish media reported that the loan was mentioned in an analysis of her finances carried out by the Spanish tax office.
The analysis was requested by an investigating judge, Jose Castro, who in May ordered an investigation into Cristina's tax affairs as part of a tax and money-laundering case against her husband.
Castro is investigating accusations that Urdangarin and his former business partner Diego Torres embezzled six million euros in public funds meant for sports events.
The money was allegedly placed in the non-profit Noos Institute, which Urdangarin chaired from 2004 to 2006 and of which Cristina was a board member.
Neither she nor Urdangarin has been formally charged with any crime.
The scandal has plunged Juan Carlos's family into its worst popularity crisis in his nearly four-decade reign.
Cristina, 48, a manager in the social programmes foundation of the Catalan finance group CaixaBank, moved to Geneva last month with her four children, where she will work on the firm's joint projects with UN institutions. Her husband will remain in Barcelona.

Was Kristin Cavallari Arrested?

Kristin Cavallari (Splash News)

Kristin Cavallari was forced to post bail on Friday.
But don't get the wrong idea: The former "Hills" star was not arrested.
However, the 26-year-old, who lives part of the year in the Chicago area with her husband, Chicago Bearsquarterback Jay Cutler, did find herself in legal hot water when police stopped her for speeding as she drove into the suburb of Evanston at 11:50 a.m. Friday.
Cavallari was able to produce only a California driver's license, which was not good enough. Illinois requires that drivers who move there from other states transfer their driver's license in the first 30 days in the Land of Lincoln, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The California girl officially moved to Chicagoland in early 2012. In July, it was revealed that the couple and their 1-year-old son Camden reside in a luxe $10,000-a-month rental home in nearby Winnetka, Illinois, when they're in the Midwest.
Unfortunately for Cavallari, California is not one of the states that participates in a cooperative agreement with others regarding licensing. She was told to follow the officer who stopped her to the police station and post $150 bond. Her ticket also comes with a $120 fine.

How Gaga Felt About Miley at the VMAs

When Lady Gaga took the stage at last month’s MTV Video Music Awards, most viewers expected her to deliver the night’s most shocking performance. Though she flashed her derriere, Miley Cyrus managed to generate more media buzz with her crude and vulgar onstage antics.
Gaga is now speaking out, saying that she doesn’t care if she didn’t have the buzziest moment of the night.
“For me, my performance was not about taking clothes off, if that makes sense,” she says in a new interview with The Guardian. “I wanted it to be strong and beautiful and powerful and full of confidence. It doesn't bother me, though, that there was a lot of attention paid to any other performances, it's not a competition. I do what I do and they do what they do.” She then adds, “Isn't it nice that it all happened and that it's all been recorded and we can watch it all – it's not like the good things stay and everything else gets erased."

What has Gaga peeved these days? Haters who say her career is over because her latest single, “Applause,” hasn’t taken off yet on the Billboard charts like some of her past hits.
"It's literally not even been two weeks since my first single came out and it's all, 'She's over', or because I'm not No. 1 yet, 'She's finished'," the singer laments. "People focus less on the music and focus more on how the music's doing; how it's faring from a numbers perspective, from a financial perspective. If you think I give a damn about money then you don't know me as an artist at all."
When asked if she feels persecuted, she tells the paper, “Yes! I certainly feel that at this time it's almost as if people are surprised they haven't already destroyed me."

"It gives them a sense of pleasure when they believe that they've destroyed me or taken me down,” she continues. “It's almost entertainment for people to poke fun at Lady Gaga, but at the very same time they have no idea the album I've made. They have no idea what I put into this, they have no idea the work that I've put behind my performances and what I do. In fact, people have no idea what it really took for me to get here. So it doesn't bother me, it's just an interesting observation of where we are as a society."

What’s the Deal with Beyonce’s Forthcoming Album?

There's no denying that Beyoncé has been hard at work this year, what with her Mrs. Carter Show world tour in full swing, major ad campaigns for Pepsi and H&M, and her notorious Super Bowl performance.
But now, on Beyonce's 32nd birthday, we find ourselves wondering, what's the deal with her forthcoming album? Fans and industry big-wigs have been waiting with baited breath to see what the self-managed superstar will deliver as the follow-up to 2011's "4."
Sure we've been teased with the tune "Grown Woman," which appeared an a Pepsi commercial, as well as "Standing On the Sun," which debuted in an H&M ad featuring the bikini-clad star frolicking in the waves. But neither of these were singles, and rumors abound that the record's release date was pushed back due to an unfavorable response to initial tunes.
Then there was "Rise Up" from the animated film "Epic" that popped up a few months agobut it appears that the complete versions of that song that were circulating around the Internet have since been taken down.
In July, the Hollywood Reporter stated that Queen Bey auditioned more than 50 songs for her fifth solo studio album, which she's been working on with several renowned contributors including Diplo, Sia and Ne-Yo, but she reportedly decided to scrap them and start over.
Beyoncé's label, Columbia Records, initially hoped that her album would be ready for a spring release, but alas, it did not come to pass. Executives then hoped she'd have it ready by the fall to compete with major releases by Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, but it looks as though that may be a pipe dream as well.
That said, she was spotted filming a new Terry Richardson-directed video just last week inConey Island. Could this video be for the new single we've all been waiting for? A spokesperson for Beyoncé could not confirm whether the new video will be an official release or if the album will come out this year. The rep
simply stated that the "Halo" singer had recently filmed various visuals.

Gail Mitchell, Billboard magazine's Senior Editor, R&B and Hip Hop, thinks Beyoncé is just taking her time. "We're in such a fast turnaround society, but when you break it down, it's just been two years," she said. "I could understand if it's an artist who is just starting out and they wait two years and then put something out, yes, I think it might be a detriment to them, but Beyoncé's got the legacy of Destiny's Child. She's got the legacy of the other solo albums."

Mitchell added that Beyoncé has also done a good job of remaining visible with all of her high profile performances, animated film "Epic," and regular updates on her Tumblr and Instagram pages.

Mitchell believes taking time to prep a new album makes a lot of sense for Beyoncé. "She's pretty savvy," Mitchell said, referring to the singer's more than 15 years experience as an A-list performer, child of two entrepreneurs and spouse to an equally wise music mogul.

"I think she has a master plan and is working on an album and will put it out when the timing is right," she said.

"Every time she comes with an album, she's trying to take it to the next level," she added. "If you're a true artist -- and I think she is -- I think you want to bring something different to the table."

So it looks like we'll have to just be patient.

Scarlett Johansson Engaged to Romain Dauriac!

Scarlett Johansson Engaged to Romain Dauriac!

Felicitations are in order for Scarlett Johansson! The Under the Skin actress, 28, is engaged to boyfriend Romain Dauriac, a French journalist, a source confirms to Us Weekly.
Dating for around 10 months, the couple first stepped out together in November 2012. It's been a "whirlwind romance," one insider tells Usof the relationship.

Rumors about a second trip down the aisle surfaced earlier this week, when the blonde stunner hit the red carpet at the 2013 Venice International Film Festival wearing a cleavage-baring black gown -- and some very noticeable bling on her left ring finger. But it wasn't the first time she had rocked a new rock.
Engagement rumors also circulated in February of this year, when the Hitchcock actress was spotted with a big diamond sparkler on her hand. At the time, her rep told Us: "She is absolutely not engaged."
This will be the second marriage for Johansson, who was previously wed to actor Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2010. (Reynolds remarried last year; he and his Green Lantern costarBlake Lively tied the knot in a secret ceremony in South Carolina on Sept. 9.)
Johansson -- whose other exes include Sean Penn and ad exec Nate Naylor -- has said she liked being married. However, she told Elle UK in January that she wasn't sure she wanted to do it again.

Meet Alec Baldwin’s New Night-Owl Baby Daughter

Alec and Hilaria's baby is making her big debut. (Extra)
Alec Baldwin isn't getting much sleep these days — and that's OK with him.
The 55-year-old actor and his wife, Hilaria, welcomed their first daughter together, Carmen Gabriela, on August 23, and she's a night owl.
"She sleeps like a rock all day. And at night she's like, 'Let's have a conference,'" Baldwin toldPeople magazine, which has pics of the nearly 2-week-old baby. Added the new mom, who is a 29-year-old yoga instructor, "Now I'm getting to the point where if I don't sleep, I'm going to start walking into walls."
Sleepless nights are OK for Baldwin, who told the mag that he's just happy to get another opportunity to experience fatherhood, which didn't go so smoothly the first time around with his daughter Ireland, now 17 and a model.
"It's a second chance for me in a way," Baldwin said. "Everybody knows I had a pretty unpleasant custody battle for Ireland."
"Unpleasant" is an understatement. The acrimonious situation with ex-wife Kim Basinger, which included a leaked voicemail message, led to his writing a book about fatherhood and divorce. However, Ireland turned out well, he told the magazine, calling her "well-adjusted and as happy as one can be."
While a spat with a paparazzo last week made big headlines, the hot-tempered "30 Rock" alum said his main priority is a simple one: to do his best to make his girls happy.
"We just want things to be easy, to be nice," the "Blue Jasmine" star said.
"Extra" has footage from behind-the-scenes at baby's first photo shoot (Hilaria is a correspondent for the show) and the new dad is seen cradling Carmen in his arms while talking about who she resembles.

"I hope she looks like her mother," he quipped in the clip, which you can see above. "What a waste of time it would be to marry a women like that and have the kid look like me."
All joking aside, "I am so lucky and blessed, all those things everybody feels when you have a baby and you want to have that family," he added.

Everyone's favorite blonde bombshell's body of work speaks for its. Upton has graced the covers of Sports IllustratedVogueElle and that just names a few. Stunning model (and cat daddy dancing enthusiast!) Kate Upton will be awarded the title of 2013 Model of the Year at Wednesday night's 10th Annual Style Awards in New York City.

Upton will accept her prize at the swanky fashion soiree, which kicks off New York Fashion Week, and will draw dozens of fashion insiders and designers, including fellow honorees like Rachel Zoe, Zac Posen, and Frederic Fekkai. The event, which will be hosted by Nicole Richie and includes a performance by Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande.

The buxom blond babe has certainly earned the title. She's had a gangbuster career already, scoring back-to-back covers of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition in 2012 and 2013, only one year after making her debut in the highly anticipated issue.
Her quick rise to the modeling elite wasn't without controversy though. In 2012, Sophia Neophitou, a model booker for Victoria's Secret, told the New York Times, “We would never use Kate ... She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”

Simon Cowell, Lauren Silverman Having a Baby Boy!

Simon Cowell, Lauren Silverman Having a Baby Boy!

As noted earlier on Sept. 3, the first-time dad-to-be actually got a glimpse of his little bundle of joy via a recent sonogram. "You literally see this thing which is now alive moving around," the normally tough-talking Brit gushed to the Times of London on Sept. 2, one month after Us Weekly broke the news of Silverman's pregnancy.

"I feel very paternal right now. So I am very happy," he said. He added, though, that he wouldn't let fatherhood change him too much. "I can assure you: I won't go soft," the former American Idol judge quipped.
Cowell and Silverman began their relationship in secret while she was still married to Cowell's friend Andrew Silverman. The estranged spouses settled their divorce a few weeks ago, on Aug. 14; together they have a son, 7-year-old Adam.

Cowell was understandably reluctant to talk about Silverman's pregnancy at first, but now that everything's out in the open, he's increasingly speaking out about his thoughts on fatherhood. "I am good with kids because I like kids," he told the BBC. "I really do like them and I listen to them. Once I got used to [the idea of becoming a father] I did get excited. I think I will be a good dad!"
