While you were busy stumbling around a crowded bar while your friend Danielle made out with an unidentified Australian in the corner (what? that wasn’t everyone’s New Year’s Eve experience?), celebrity-kind rang in 2014 in a host of glamorous ways. And they didn’t have to worry about paying hundreds of dollars for an Uber at the end of the night, either.
Let’s take a look at what some of our beautiful A-lister friends did to celebrate New Year’s Eve:
Taylor Swift. The flaxen-haired pop star welcomed 2014 not with new best friend Lorde (with whom she recently celebrated her 24th birthday), nor with erstwhile (?) best friend Selena Gomez, but with . . . Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland. It sort of seems like Taylor just has the names of all members of Young Hollywood in a giant bowl, from which she picks one out on any given night, and then that celebrity receives an envelope caked in fairy dust summoning her to Taylor’s lair. Anyway, Taylor and Sarah celebrated the year’s end in some undisclosed location; we imagine Taylor spent most of the night quoting her favorite Manny lines (she hasto love Manny, right?) with Sarah making a whole production of laughing way too hard every time.
Rihanna. After a vacation in Barbados, the icon jetted to New York, where she hosted a party at Jay Z’s 40/40 Club. Beforehand, though, she held an ornate dinner at her new New York City penthouse for friends, staff and model Cara Delevingne. Rihanna generously supplied 50 (!) pictures of the dinner (including one of her helping to prepare the meal) on Instagram yesterday. If this was a friend of yours, you’d probably passive-aggressively text her “Umm, thanks for not clogging my feed or anything!!” with a winking emoticon; but, since it’s Rihanna, it’s wonderful and great.
Katy Perry. Katy Perry had to work New Year’s Eve, as she performed a private concert in Las Vegas for select Caesars Palace guests. John Mayer was on hand, as well, though he reportedly “watched from the sound booth” for the whole night, presumably making notes in his iPhone on ways he might “adjust the sound mix to enhance Katy’s voice” or “reconfigure the set list, just, you know, as a suggestion.” Katy was able to carouse and let loose later in the night, it would seem, as John posted this picture of Katy holding a giant bottle of Dom Perignon, which no doubt will inspire a double entendre for her to use on her next album.
Kim Kardashian. Kim, Kourtney, Scott Disick and Kanye West spent their New Year’s Eve in Utah, where the foursome enjoyed a skiing vacation. While this sounds relatively normal for the anything-but-normal Kimye, one must assume they rented out a private slope with emerald-plated chair lifts, or raced on $600,000 Lanvin snowboards—something. Earlier in the day, Kim shared a few (Kanye-less) missives—in the form of Keek videos, of course—from the slopes, in which she appears, dare we say it, pretty silly and refreshingly unguarded.
Jennifer Lawrence. While we do not know for sure exactly how Jennifer Lawrence spent the night of New Year’s Eve, she was spotted a few days beforehand with boyfriend Nicholas Hoult in a British pub. We’re guessing the two spent the holiday on a couch indoors somewhere in the Scottish countryside, where they munched on nachos as 2013 wound down and Jennifer told stories for hours on end while Nicholas just sat cross-legged and listened (that’s what we’d do if we were able to spend New Year’s Eve with Jennifer Lawrence, at least).
Beyoncé and Jay Z. America’s first couple spent New Year’s Eve down in Miami, celebrating at Diddy's bash with—get ready to “awww” (or, at least, think “awww” in your head)—Bey’s former Destiny’s Child mates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams! Also on hand? Models Joan Smalls, Chanel Iman and Jourdan Dunn—all of whom appeared in Beyoncé’s “Yoncé” video. Someone released a video snippet of Bey dancing to “Yoncé” at the club, which we’re surprised didn’t result in some sort of mass riot when it happened.
Miley Cyrus. Appropriately, Miley bid farewell to the year which she ruled on a grandiose stage, performing in Times Square minutes before the ball dropped. By Miley standards, though, the performance was surprisingly low-key. Sure, she bared her midriff and wagged her tongue with relish, but she left the theatrics and provocation to a minimum, belting album cut “Get It Right” and massive hit “Wrecking Ball” with nary a twerk or grind. She couldn’t keep it totallymuted, though, as she kissed host Ryan Seacrest at midnight, which . . . makes us feel unsettled, honestly. (Click on the link to see the picture at your own risk.)
Jennifer Aniston. Jen made her way down to Mexico, as she does every year, with Friend-for-life Courteney Cox. They were accompanied by Jimmy Kimmel and Howard Stern, and their wives. We hope the group played “Never Have I Ever” and Spin the Bottle, but, more likely, Jen and Courteney decided to go off and “do their own thing” (an excuse to gossip about everyone else) while Howard and Jimmy drank beers and watched football games (while their wives scrolled through their Instagram feeds and wondered whether Jen and Courteney were talking smack about them or not).
