The 10 Unfunniest ‘Comedies’ Nominated for Golden Globes

Golden Globes Comedies

What you've gotta respect about the Golden Globes: They recognize comedy, a genre the Oscars ignores with infuriating regularity.

What you've gotta question about the Golden Globes: How exactly they define the term "comedy.

" It's easy to define a musical – which is why seemingly every musical pumped out of Hollywood makes the cut in the Globes' Best Picture – Musical or Comedy category. This year's slate – which includes the quasi-comedies "American Hustle," "The Wolf of Wall Street," "Her" and "Nebraska" (as well as the quasi-musical "Inside Llewyn Davis") isn't so bad (in fact the quintet as a whole might be stronger than the Drama category).

But some of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's choices for non-musicals in the category have been downright dubious in recent years.

the prevalent theory is the HFPA will shoehorn star-studded non-comedies or musicals into this category to get more big-name celebrities to come to their party.

Here are some of the very unfunniest to get nods recently, which at the very least prove one thing: They think Johnny Depp is hilarious.

10. "Chocolat" (2000)
You Call This Funny? A woman (Juliette Binoche) and her daughter hawk chocolate in a small French village during Lent; Johnny Depp shows up as a sexy gypsy. (All the talk of "Chocolat" in "I Love You Man," now that was funny.)
What Comedies They Got Right That Year: "Best in Show," "O Brother Where Art Thou?," "Chicken Run"
What Comedies They Missed: "Meet the Parents," "High Fidelity"
9. "My Week With Marilyn" (2011)
You Call This Funny? A dude (Eddie Redmaybe) recounts that time he almost made love to a very emotionally damaged Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams).

What Comedies They Missed: "Horrible Bosses," "The Muppets"
8. "Nicholas Nickleby" (2002)
You Call This Funny? A young man must tend to his mother and sister after his father kicks the can.

What Comedies They Missed: Pretty slim pickings that year, though there was "Jackass: The Movie" and "Super Troopers"
Alice in Wonderland

You Call This Funny? Johnny Depp terrifies children as a hyperactive, schizophrenic, Madonna-resembling tea addict.
What Comedies They Got Right That Year: "The Kids Are All Right," which is also a drama
What Comedies They Missed: "Get Him to the Greek," "The Other Guys," "Easy A," "Hot Tub Time Machine"
6. "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" (2012)
You Call This Funny? Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor go … salmon fishing in the Yemen.
