Nicki Minaj Sued for Wig Plagiarism

Nicki Minaj Sued for Wig Plagiarism

Now that's hair-raising:  According to Time, Nicki Minaj is facing a $30 million lawsuit from her former "wig guru" Terrence Davidson, who claims the rapper stole, licensed and sold his personal designs without sharing the profits. The suit was filed Friday at an Atlanta courthouse.
The lawsuit claims that the two started working together in 2010, with Davidson's "fresh, unique and highly distinguishable" accessories (including gems like the "Pink Upper Bun Wig," the "SuperBass Wig" and the "Half Blonde-Half Pink Wig") helping to cement Minaj's offbeat image. But Davidson says he was gradually weaned out of the partnership, with Minaj eventually selling her own wig line on her website, MyPinkFriday.com. Davidson also flipped his wig over a separate issue: He claims Minaj's management persuaded him not to sign a a multi-million-dollar deal for a reality show, as it would tarnish the pair's relationship.
“Her lawyers may complicate it, but we don’t need to get into intellectual-property law," says Christopher Chestnut, Davidson's big-wig attorney. "This is basic American morality. Nicki Minaj lied to this man and cheated him. . . It’s a classic David versus Goliath situation."
It's been a weird month for Minaj: Last week, the singer/rapper faced criticism from the family and estate of Malcolm X after using the civil rights leader's image in the artwork for her new single, "Lookin Ass Nigga." She later apologized, claiming it was "never the official artwork." "I apologize to the Malcolm X estate if the meaning of the photo was misconstrued," she wrote on Instagram. "I have nothing but respect (and) adoration for u."
