MTV's 2014 Video Music Awards proved with its red carpet that statement-making fashion was the name of the game that evening. While many stars relied on capturing attention via daring details on their outfits, some such as Amber Rose borrowed from vintage looks dating back nearly two decades.
Katy Perry and rapper Riff Raff raised the stakes even further in the homage department, however, adding a touch of humor that has become par for the course for Perry's famously lighthearted getups.
Recognize this famous look? The superstar chose to dress in an-all denim dress and statement belt reminiscent of the (yes, awful, but you certainly remembered it, right?) gown Britney Spears wore to the American Music Awards in 2001. Riff Raff, for his part, donned a matching denim suit, which we are guessing the now impeccably cool Justin Timberlake has purposefully blocked forevermore from his memory.
Yee haw, right? Well, have to give Perry and her game escort credit for not being afraid to rock a truly terrible look the second time around.
Perry was an early winner at the 2014 VMAs, scoring the Female Video of the Year early in the night for "Dark Horse." The 2014 VMAs aired Aug. 24 at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif.
