Pakistani girl shot by Taliban honored at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — A Pakistani girl who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban has been honored as Harvard University's humanitarian of the year.

Malala Yousafzai, an outspoken proponent for girls' education, was at Harvard on Friday to accept the 2013 Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian Award. Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust said she was pleased to welcome Malala because of their shared interest in education.

Malala was shot in the head last October. Militants said she was attacked because she was critical of the Taliban, not because of her views on education.

The 16-year-old Malala said she hopes to become a politician because politicians can have influence on a broad scale.

She spoke nostalgically about her home region, the Swat Valley, and said she hopes to return someday. She called it a "paradise" but described a dangerous area where militants blew up dozens of schools and sought to discourage girls from going to school by snatching pens from their hands. Students, she said, reacted by hiding their books under their shawls so people wouldn't know they were going to school.

"The so-called Taliban were afraid of women's power and were afraid of the power of education," she told hundreds of students, faculty members and well-wishers who packed Harvard's ornate Sanders Theater for the award ceremony.

Malala highlighted the fact that very few people spoke out against what was happening in her home region.

"Although few people spoke, but the voice for peace and education was powerful," she said.

Malala also described waking up in a United Kingdom hospital, where she was taken for emergency treatment following the assassination attempt in Pakistan.

"And when I was in Birmingham, I didn't know where I was, I didn't know where my parents are, I didn't know who has shot me and I had no idea what was happening," she said. "But I thank God that I'm alive."

The chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize Committee, Thorbjorn Jagland, paid a special tribute to Malala in a message read publicly during her award ceremony.

"Your courage," Jagland said in the tribute, "is sending a strong message to women to stand up for their rights, which constitutes a precondition for peace."

Museum reclaims Jane Austen ring from Kelly Clarkson

LONDON (AFP) - US singer Kelly Clarkson has been foiled in her attempt to take home a ring once owned by Jane Austen, after a British museum said on Monday it had raised enough money to buy it back.

The 31-year-old singer bought the ring at an auction last year, but the British government blocked her from taking it out of Britain while attempts were made to raise funds to "save it for the nation".

Jane Austen's House Museum in Hampshire, southern England, where the 19th century author penned her six novels, said Clarkson had accepted its offer of £157,740 ($253,300, 187,500 euros) for the ring.

The museum had been outbid by Clarkson at the original auction, but launched a campaign in August to raise buy-back funds from Austen fans around the world.

Curator Mary Guyatt said the museum was "thrilled" to be bringing the gold and turquoise ring "home".

"The museum has been stunned by the generosity and light-footedness of all those who have supported our campaign," she said.

"Visitors come from all around the world to see the house where she once lived and we will now take great pleasure in displaying this pretty ring for their appreciation."

The ring, one of only three surviving pieces of jewellery known to have belonged to the celebrated novelist, is due to go on display at the museum early next year.

Known for their gentle mocking of the landed gentry, Austen's novels including "Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma" are among Britain's best-loved classics.

Austen fan Clarkson, whose hits include "A Moment Like This" and "Since U Been Gone", has sold more than 20 million albums.

She shot to fame as the winner of the "American Idol" TV talent contest in 2002.

Tycoon plans $8 billion Chinese Hollywood

QINGDAO, China (AP) — China's richest man plans to spend 50 billion yuan ($8.2 billion) to build the country's version of Hollywood in the northeastern city of Qingdao.

In a glitzy, star-studded red carpet event on Sunday, Wang Jianlin said his company, Dalian Wanda Group, will build a state of the art film studio complex in a bid to dominate China's rapidly growing movie market.

The Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis's 20 studios will include a permanent underwater studio and a 10,000 square-meter (108,000 square-feet) stage that Wang said would be the world's biggest. The facility will also include an Imax research and development center, cinemas and China's biggest film and celebrity wax museums. The first phase is planned to open in June 2016 and it will be fully operational by June 2017.

A yacht marina, eight hotels and a theme park will be built to attract tourists.

The company has signed a preliminary deal with "a number of global film and television giants and talent agencies" to shoot about 30 foreign films a year. It did not name the companies.

Wang also hopes to attract more than 50 Chinese production companies to make at least 100 domestic films and TV shows a year at the studios, where sets will simulate locations from Europe, the Middle East and China's Ming and Qing dynasties.

Dalian Wanda, which operates cinemas, hotels and department stores in China, last year bought the U.S. cinema chain AMC for $2.6 billion and snapped up British yacht maker Sunseeker in June this year.

The tycoon's red carpet event in Qingdaounderlined his outsized ambitions for China's entertainment industry. Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Travolta and Leonardo DiCaprio rubbed elbows with Chinese stars including Zhang Ziyi, Jet Li andTony Leung at the event in Qingdao, best known for Tsingtao Brewery founded when Germany colonized the city a century ago.

Wang's success in attracting the A-list actors to his launch, held the same day as the Emmy entertainment awards show in Los Angeles, also highlights how the center of gravity in the global film industry is shifting to the east.

In an interview, Wang boasted of his plans to expand in China's movie market, which overtook Japan to become the world's second biggest after ticket sales rose 36 percent last year to $2.7 billion.

"There's no single company in the whole world that has a big-scale production base, and at the same time has screening and distribution channels. Wanda Group is the first one in the world," said Wang, Wanda's founder and chairman. "As long as we build the film production park and produce better content, we'll certainly be the most successful company in this industry."

He predicted China's film market would become the world's biggest in five years, and compared it to a big cake that foreign studios would love to share.

Hollywood has been eager to expand distribution in China as domestic box office revenue stagnates. But the Chinese government tightly controls the market, allowing in only 34 foreign films per year for national distribution.
 At least 14 of them must be made in 3-D or for the big-screen Imax format. Wang was named China's richest person earlier this month with a fortune of $22 billion by the Hurun Report, which follows China's wealthy. Forbes also said Wang rose to the top spot on its China rich list, with his estimated fortune rising to $14 billion.

As "The Voice" debuted its new season on Monday night, audiences got a sneak peek of one contestant with a famous sibling -- Briana Cuoco, the younger sister of Kaley Cuoco, star of CBS' "The Big Bang Theory."

Briana was shown in a short clip alongside her famous sister being surprised by Carson Daly with the news that she will have the chance to attend the blind auditions and perform in front of coaches Adam Levine, CeeLo Green, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera.

Access caught up with Kaley's "The Big Bang Theory" co-stars on the Emmy red carpet last night who had nothing but glowing reviews for Briana.

"She has a beautiful voice," Mayim Bialik told Accesshollywood.com's Laura Saltman. "She is phenomenal. She's very, very talented."

Jim Parsons happily told Access how impressed he is with Briana.

"She is a great a lot of things. We give Kaley a lot of hell like 'Oh so finally the world is going to see the really talented Cuoco!' Which is not true we just want to give her s**t!"

Besides being a singer, Briana is also a dancer and choreographer. Back in March, Briana choreographed a flash mob routine for her sister and the entire cast and crew of "The Big Bang Theory," an idea Kaley came up with as a surprise for the show's creators.

Briana has also been racking up screen credits in the acting world with small roles on "The Newsroom," "The Mentalist" and a guest role on her sister's show "The Big Bang Theory" last season where she played the character Gretchen, the new girlfriend of one of Penny's ex-boyfriends in the Valentine's Day episode.

The cat got out of the bag early last week about "The Voice" when several people began Tweeting Briana about being on the show. Briana clarified in a Tweet saying - "Ok just to be CLEAR as GLASS-I never said I'm gonna be ON it. I said I AUDITIONED for it - you have to TUNE IN to see how I did."

Adios! Who Was the First 'Dancing With the Stars' Couple Sent Home?

SPOILER ALERT: This recap reveals the elimination results of Week 2 of "Dancing With the Stars."

If you can't take the heat, get out of the ballroom! 

Or so it went on Week 2 of "Dancing With the Stars," when the new cast got hot hot hot with a Latin theme that featured the samba, jive, rumba, and paso doble. But for one couple it was not not not a good night, because the show's second episode also meant it was time for the first couple of the season to go home. Yes, we know that was fast, but this season's slimmed-down format means there's no time to waste!

So who sizzled and who fizzled on Latin night? After Monday night's Latin ballroom round, Keyshawn Johnson and his pro partner Sharna Burgess were eliminated from the competition. The couple's Latin ballroom dance scores were combined with last week's totals and audience votes, making them the overall lowest scorers of the competition.

Bill Nye and Tyne Stecklein — Paso Doble

Last week, science guy Bill Nye and his new-to-the-show pro, Tyne Stecklein, who landed at the bottom of the judges' leaderboard, with a paltry 14 points. (Yeah, the judges were harsh; Bruno Tonioli told the PBS science educator he had the wrong "formula," while Len Goodman compared the duo's mad scientist-themed cha-cha to a bad wax job.) But Nye has a huge fan following. "DWTS" co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet told USA Today that Nye's Week 1 dance went viral with close to 3 million hits on YouTube, the most of any dance in the competition's history. Nye's wacky Week 2 dance had him donning a maestro wig for a trippy (literally!) paso doble that had Tonioli saying, "You nearly blew a gasket!" Carrie Ann Inaba called the dance a "weird, bizarre masterpiece of insanity."

Leah Remini and Tony Dovolani — Samba

Former "King of Queens" star Remini addressed her headline making exit from the Church of Scientology, telling partner Tony Dovolani, "The church is looking for me to fail, so they can say to their parishioners 'See what happens when you leave the church' … like they're waiting for me to fail." But the actress didn't fail as far as the judges were concerned. Her samba got rave reviews, with Inaba telling her, "You unleashed your samba goddess!" Not only that, but Tonioli said, "So much flair, so much fun, you came out of yourself. No more doubts." To cap things off, Remini got a standing O from the glitter pit.

Elizabeth Berkley and Val Chmerkovskiy — Samba

The "Saved By the Bell" alum was a lady in red for a sleek samba that gave Tonioli a case of "scarlet fever." Inaba told the star: "You are in your element."

Christina Milian and Mark Ballas — Paso Doble

The pop star and her pro partner went gaga for a paso with a Lady Gaga twist. Inaba said the dance was "night and day from last week," telling the couple they "nailed every quirky line."

Bill Engvall and Emma Slater — Jive

The comedian rocked a "Crocodile Rock" jive that featured "everything but the kitchen sink," according to Tonioli. Inaba said the footwork "was a little funky, but fantastic fun," while Goodman went so far as to tell the comic, "From a distance I could have sworn you were Derek [Hough]."

Jack Osbourne and Cheryl Burke — Rumba

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne's son had a bad rehearsal moment when he criticized his "bad genes," but the judges didn't criticize his Week 2 dance. Goodman praised the reality star's "fluidity and lines," while Tonioli told him, "What you've done in two weeks is unbelievable."

Nicole Polizzi and Sasha Farber — Rumba

The "Jersey Shore" alum put on her sexy face for her rumba with Sasha Farber (but not too sexy, because her fiancé Jionni was watching!), but Inaba thought it kind of stopped there. "I wanted more dimension," the judge said, before slapping the reality star with a penalty for two lifts.

Corbin Bleu and Karina Smirnoff — Jive

Inaba wanted an instant encore of this "High School Musical"-themed jive, and Tonioli dubbed it "a performance of dazzling brilliance." While Bleu admitted he's had the luck of the draw so far when it comes to dance styles (last week he had contemporary) he's ready for harder challenges, like the quickstep.

Valerie Harper and Tristan McManus — Paso Doble

The 74-year-old TV legend wowed the audience last week. This week she complained of pain in her knee, but she pushed on for the paso doble. The judges gave mixed reviews, praising her courage and character capturing, but Inaba told her she seemed a little lost. "I feel that you forgot about a third of your routine in the middle," Inaba critiqued.

Brant Daugherty and Peta Murgatroyd — Rumba

Can they get any steamier? Last week, this surprise couple steamed up the ballroom (the pro dancer was checking out the "Pretty Little Liars" star's single status at first sight) and this week was much more of the same. But Goodman could see the actor's pigeon toes through the steam! Inaba was wowed by the sexy rumba, but Goodman said, "I wasn't going into ecstasy over the thing."

Amber Riley and Derek Hough — Jive

After nabbing last week's high score (they scored the show's first-ever opening night triple nines), the "Glee" star and her Emmy-toting partner put on another fun show. So much so that Goodman called Riley "a big bundle of joy to watch." Inaba chimed in with, "You continue to wow us."

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles didn't disappoint tonight as "Breaking Bad" took home the final Emmy of the evening for Outstanding Drama Series, giving die-hard fans a silver lining as the show concludes next week. The night also included some surprises as "The Newsroom's" Jeff Daniels beat out Bryan Cranston for Lead Actor in a Drama and Kerry Washington didn't win for Lead Actress in a Drama like expected. 10. America's Jolliest Announcer

From the moment the doors opened, the voice of the public-address announcer urging the audience into their seats kept the crowd laughing. Some of his biggest laugh lines:

• "Please make your way to your seats... The seat fillers are starting to get their hopes up."
• "The show is starting shortly... This is the perfect excuse to get away from the conversation you are trying to escape."
• "Attention please, the show will start without you. It will be tragic, but it will."

9. The Big Threat for Can't-Shut-Up Acceptance Speakers

At 4:57 p.m. PT the producers still weren't sure if the show would start on time as the Jets-Bills game dragged on. As the minutes ticked away, they gave an obligatory memo over the P.A. to try and keep speeches short: "This year we decided we aren't going to play music [to cut you off], instead our plan is if you go long, this..." and on the screens appeared the Red Wedding scene from "Game of Thrones."

8. "Breaking Bad" Was the Home-Court Favorite.

Every "Breaking Bad" mention got huge applause from the audience (actor, show, anything in promos). The crowd lost it when "Breaking Bad" won the night's final prize. Literally shouts of "yes!" and "thank God!" erupted throughout the room.

7. The Merritt Badge.

Even presenter Tina Fey was surprised when Merritt Wever won. But Fey loved Wever's one-line speech, dying laughing as Fey escorted her out. Later in the night, before the final two segments, the executive producer came out and said to the crowd, "Bless Merritt Wever," reminding people to keep their speeches short.

6. Best. Cast. Ever.

The entire "Veep" team was on its feet for Tony Hale's Best Supporting win, staying there as Julia Louis-Dreyfus fist-pumped her way down the aisle to accept her Best Actress award. Hands down, the Veeps were the most fun cast in the room, their excitement palpable. Julia and Tony laughed and held hands as as they ran off stage. And the whole group posed for selfies together during commercial breaks.

5. No Sore Losers in This "Family."

Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Ty Burell met up in aisle during third commercial break to chat and catch up. Laughing and happy, there wasn't a hint of bitterness to be seen despite the "Modern Family" cast being shut out of acting awards.

4. House of Mirth

Far from the evil, conniving character he plays on "House of Cards," Kevin Spacey seemed perfectly happy for Jeff Daniels after losing out for Best Actor (or Spacey is just a really really good actor). The two-time Oscar winner shruged off the loss, smiling and joking with a friend next to him. Kate Mara started walking up when "House of Cards" won for Best Directing, but she didn't make it to the stage. Carrie Preston accepted briefly on behalf of the MIA David Fincher, so she ran back to her seat.

Every time "The Colbert Report" won — breaking "The Daily Show's" 10-year lock on the category — Jon Stewart and his crew were the first out of their seats to cheer their network mates on.

1. They Like Mike

Best received speech hands down was Michael Douglas, who had the room in stitches. No one more so, however, than co-star Matt Damon, who also cheered the loudest when Michael won, smiling ear to ear the whole time.
